Jila Nikpay's work explores the nature of memory and belonging. Her experimental films and photography exists at the intersection of western modernism and the strong tradition of Iranian poetry. This approach allows her to transform particular historical and social issues into privately felt, internally experienced constructs. Nikpay’s film and photography are interdependent and inform one another. Their hypnotic and open ended visual language portrays her protagonist as nomadic characters, crossing boundaries of the real and imagined.
Nikpay's work has been exhibited at the Walker Art Center, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, Minnesota Historical Society and numerous institutions. She is the recipient of many awards for her photography and film from the Jerome and McKnight Foundations, as well as the Minnesota State Arts Board and others.
