About the book

Heroines is collection of black and white portraits and prose-poetry that brings to light the trial and spiritual transformation of 21 Minnesota women who faced breast cancer. The book spawned from an experiential workshop entitled "Body Image," in which Nikpay transforms the veil from a cultural/political expression into an aesthetic device for the exploration of body identity.

Mystery of Transformation

The soul, obscured by ego and encased in the body, expresses itself in the most unlikely ways and in the most unexpected places. In my search for this elusive human quality, I have crossed the land of health and into the land of illness to meet with those who have experienced breast cancer. My subjects have realized that beyond this hinterland of suffering lies a body of water in which the spirit caresses their soul and heals their wounds.

UPCOMING BOOK PROJECT

Between Worlds: Portraits of Immigrant Youth, in progress
This project explores the identity of American adolescents from immigrant families through a series of portraits. The collection of work captures the inner psych of youth at a crucial transitional time before adulthood when they must then negotiate their inherited culture.
